Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

A relatively accessible source with a high cell yield per tissue volume.

Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) · Updated 2 Sept 2026

In short

Adipose-derived stem cells are MSC isolated from subcutaneous fat, usually via a small liposuction. Advantages include high cell yield per tissue volume and easier collection than bone marrow. Studied properties include inflammation modulation and secretion of signalling factors.

Collection and isolation

A small volume of adipose tissue is collected under sterile technique and processed to obtain the stromal vascular fraction, after which stem cells are selected and expanded in a controlled laboratory. This must be performed under verifiable manufacturing standards.

Why this source is common

Compared with bone marrow, adipose collection is less painful and yields more stem cells per gram of tissue, suiting research that requires large cell numbers. EHL BIO publishes information on adipose-derived stem cells on its public website.
